Drifters' Vehicles

All Drifters vehicles are designed in a manner that reflects our decades of experience in the safari industry.

Only newly purchased Mercedes Benz vehicles are used. Passenger cabin, body work and storage areas are all custom-built to our specifications, taking passenger safety, comfort and reliability into account.

The benefits of using the Drifters vehicles:

• Opening Front Windows – Provide excellent forward vision, and enable clients to stand up front at slow speed in game parks, etc. 
• Concertina – Allows for open communication between clients and driver at all times.
• Intercom / CD Shuttle – Allows guide to communicate with all passengers and provides for entertainment whilst travelling outside of game parks.
• Bull bar – For maximum client safety.
• 170 HP Motor – Powerful Turbocharged diesel motor.
• Library – Reference books provided for clients’ use.
• High Floatation Tyres – Designed for maximum reliability in rough terrain. Also speed-rated to 110km/h to allow for comfortable cruising speed. Two spare wheels are carried on each vehicle.
• Roof Seat – Excellent for game viewing, etc. (Where permitted) 
• Windows – Opening, Floor to Ceiling shatterproof windows provide excellent visibility and photographic opportunity.
• Shade Awning – Opens to five meters x length of the truck to provide shade and rain protection when necessary.
  Sub-Saharan map provided for clients’ use at all times 
• 200 Litre Lockers – Accessible whilst travelling and via back door when parked. Provide each client with a lockable area in which to store personal belongings.
• Stainless Steel Table and Cooking Equipment – For hygienic food preparation, etc.
• Bog Poles – To prevent bogging in mud or soft sand.
• Stainless Wash Basin – Provides hygienic, convenient dish washing facility.
  Long Range Fuel Tanks
• Drinking Water – 300 Litre water tank to provide safe water for use at all times 
• Storage Lockers – For equipment to be stored neatly and for maximum accessibility.
• Refrigeration and Cooling Facilities – Drinks can be kept cold, and food kept fresh.
• Aircraft Type Seating – 16 Forward facing passenger seats provide for maximum comfort. Seats are spaced over a metre apart to allow maximum legroom. Individual armrests are provided. 
• Center Aisle – Allows passengers to move around freely. Front and Rear Doors – For easy access to passenger cabin.
• Gas Cookers – Provide a clean, quick, and efficient cooking facility. Campfires are used for cooking when it can be done without degradation to the environment.

4X4 Vehicle – As used for the Botswana and Mozambique tours are similar to the standard vehicle, but specifically adapted to suit rough terrain. This vehicle tows a trailer, enabling us to set up camp, and then proceed on game drives without having to repack. Limited to 13 passenger seats to allow for maximum game viewing opportunities. These vehicles are also fully equipped for maximum client comfort. For small groups Landcruisers are used.

Guides - All 45 Drifters guides are qualified, full-time professionals, registered with the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa and the South African Tourism Board. All guides are specifically registered and licensed in order to provide you with an informative, safe and enjoyable experience whatever your choice of safari.

Camping & General Equipment: Only the best available equipment is used. Owning our own retail store enables us to keep abreast of developments in this field, and to develop and manufacture most of our own equipment to the highest international standards. Chairs, tents and rubber sleeping mats are provided on all of our tours.
